Years Growing Roses: 30+
How I Started with Roses: I started growing roses by ordering the “test roses” from J&P. My garden usually had from 6-12 roses at any time. By 1989, in Benicia, we had 12 roses until we stumbled on the NBRS booth at the Napa Home and Garden Show manned by Larry Olson & Richard Lossing. They convinced us to “stop and smell the roses” and to join the NBRS. That’s all it took to get us hooked and we started buying roses by the dozen, going from the original 12 to about 50 in the first 2 years and to over 100 by the end of the 3rd year. We have stayed around 110 - 150 at any given time over the last 10 years. We will be moving to a much smaller place in Pleasanton in 2007 so we are having to truly “plan” the garden to maximize the use of the space we have so we can grow as many roses as possible.
