Years Growing Roses: 53
How I Started with Roses: I was the eldest of four children. During World War II, my Father created a Victory garden and eliminated a large lawn. Maintenance of this vegetable garden was my responsibility. Dad also put up a large wagon wheel and flag pole. The wagon wheel painted white served as a trellis for the Cl. Blaze. We also grew "Japanese" roses, which later in life I realized were Rugosas. I have taken College Hort. classes but did not get a degree. I also played the Oboe and Baritone Sax through school and 2 years of college.
Profession:: I attended Eau Claire State College (WI) for my first year, and the "U" of Minnesota for my second year (where I met Bill - and somebody had to support him while he got all the degrees). I was employed by Western Electric as a Statistician. I worked at a large retail nursery (Fountain Square) for 20 years establishing a large rose garden and we conducted 2 rose shows per year as well as teaching pruning techniques every weekend in January (for 20 years).
Rose Society Offices: Currently NCNH Prizes and Awards Chair; Consulting Rosarian (since 1962); Horticultural Judge (since 1964); Served as District Secretary (mid 60’s), District Education Chair, Local Society Rose Show Chair.
